Spacecraft Propulsion Lead Engineer


This position will lead the propulsion and thermal control system design and analysis efforts for ispace’s lunar lander development. ispace is a leading micro-robotics Japanese company with a subsidiary in the United States and another planned in Europe. ispace’s Hakuto rover won the Google XPRIZE mobility milestone award and is a leading contender for the $20M Grand Prize. ispace’s lunar lander is its next step towards prospecting for, mining and utilizing lunar resources to expand human presence in space.

The ideal candidate will have experience in propulsion, attitude control and thermal management system design and analysis for spacecraft applications. The effort includes all phases of design, from helping the team define system architecture, to design, analysis, and support of small scale manufacturing and testing.


  • Participate in product definition, specification and requirements phases
  • Collaborate on architecture design, trade studies, component and manufacturing process selection
  • Detailed design of spacecraft propulsion, thermal management and RCS system/components, including lines, valves and instrumentation
  • Analysis for optimizing design, especially for thermal and vibration environments
  • Supporting other engineers with thermal analysis capabilities
  • Hardware assembly and integration


  • Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Three or more years’ experience in propulsion system design and analysis
  • Thermal/thermodynamic analysis experience
  • Experience supporting manufacturing processes
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills


  • Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or a related field
  • Design and simulation of deep space propulsion systems
  • Thermodynamic analysis experience of liquid propellant systems
  • Spacecraft thermal control system design and analysis experience
  • Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, Solidworks or similar analysis software experience
  • Small spacecraft and/or lander development, launch vehicle integration and test support
