Spacecraft Avionics and Electrical Lead Engineer


This position will lead the avionics and electrical systems design and analysis efforts for ispace’s lunar lander development. ispace is a leading micro-robotics Japanese company with a subsidiary in the United States and another planned in Europe. ispace’s Hakuto rover won the Google XPRIZE mobility milestone award and is a leading contender for the $20M Grand Prize. ispace’s lunar lander is its next step towards prospecting for, mining and utilizing lunar resources to expand human presence in space.

The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge base in avionics design and flight software integration including redundant and single string spacecraft avionics for small and microsatellite buses, single board computers, CCSDS products, CC&DH, electrical power, propulsion and GNC systems. The effort includes all phases of design, from helping the team define system architecture, to schematics and layout, to component selection and supporting small scale manufacturing and hardware/software debugging. A desire to iterate designs quickly and interest in performing hands-on prototyping is a must.


  • Participate in product definition, specification and requirements phases
  • Collaborate on architecture design, component selection including make or buy decisions, data bus and power harness design with other design and analysis team members
  • Detailed design/verification of spacecraft avionics and power system components for structural, thermal, electrical and EMI/EMC performance
  • Document requirements and specification
  • Perform schematics and layout design
  • Prototyping of electronics including assembly and testing
  • Support integration, troubleshooting and testing


  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (EE), or equivalent
  • Five or more years’ experience in hardware design and software integration for high-reliability applications
  • Design experience across a range of electrical/electronic, computing solutions and data processing and communication systems
  • Experience in procurement and integration of electrical/electronic components
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills


  • Ph.D. degree in Aerospace/Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Ten or more years’ spacecraft avionics design experience
  • Specific spacecraft power system experience including solar panels, batteries and power management 
  • Flight computer and software integration experience
  • Specific GNC system design and integration
  • Small spacecraft and/or lander development, launch vehicle integration and test support
  • Experience with electrical ground support equipment and command and control networks
